About Me - Crystal Baird

For over 5 years, my profession has been that of a nurse, mostly school and public health with adolescents. While I enjoy health and wellness, and I even became a Certified Health Coach, I became burned out on the day-to-day and wanted to return to my original passion: writing and blogging. I feel that, while behavioral health disorders are quite common among the general population, it’s still not getting the awareness and education that physical health problems are. I want to change that.

It’s personal for me. For the last 17 years, I have battled with depression off and on. And there’s many others I know personally or am related to who have lived through their own struggles with various disorders. Their recovery is inspiring, and I want others to know that living a full and healthy life is possible. While I currently am managing without medication and with lifestyle changes, I like that mental health care is not “one size fits all” and that we all need different plans and treatments through each stage of our life.

Topics I love to write about:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety and stress management

  • Resilience and positive psychology

  • Mental health stigma

  • Lifestyle strategies to manage mental health

  • Equal access to mental healthcare for all races and genders

  • How technology is changing the face of behavioral care delivery

I excel at communicating absurdly complicated concepts into clear and actionable takeaways that people can understand and use in their daily life. My work matters because health needs to stop being about treating the symptoms of disease and disorder and move towards learning self-advocacy and maintaining our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

On a personal note, I have a severe obsession with pens and stationary. I can get lost for hours in bookstores. I love hot teas, especially jasmine green tea. I am active in my local Unitarian Church and with social issues such as healthcare and economic equity. And I like hiking out in nature and taking an absurd amount of pictures. I live in Kansas City with my husband and our cat.
